About the Monticello HPC

The Monticello Historic Preservation Commission is a city-appointed body dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting the rich architectural and cultural heritage of Monticello, Illinois. Through education, advocacy, and thoughtful planning, the Commission works to maintain the historic character of the community while encouraging sensitive development and revitalization.

The Commission reviews proposed changes to designated historic properties, offers guidance to property owners, and identifies buildings and sites of historical significance. The Commission also is tasked with any reviews of requests for zoning amendments or actions impacting a property within one of the three historic districted listed on the National Register of Historic Places, prior to official consideration by the Planning & Zoning Board and City Council. Its mission is to ensure that Monticello's unique history remains a visible and vibrant part of the city's identity for future generations.
