"Bender House", c. 1885
Queen Anne Victorian
Jeremiah Bender was the first occupant of this house. Bender was born in Ohio in 1833 and moved to Piatt County with his parents in 1842. He clerked at the local Hollingsworth store before going into the mercantile business himself and he worked in the brokerage business for over thirty years. Ona Lee Cline was the second owner of the this house. Cline was the cofounder of the Burgess and Cline Insurance Agency.
This house features the Queen Anne Victorian style; irregular shape, two and a half story, with replacement and decorative wood shingle siding and wide shingled belt course, and hip roof. The porch is very elaborate with decorative turned posts accented by brackets with drops and side braces with open circles and a turned balustrade. The wood stairs to the north are set below a round arch with incised spandrels and a gable with a sunburst in the tympanum. A projecting bay window is topped by an elaborate wood shingled gable with ornate apex barge boards in a double wagon wheel design.
